We manage our business through our experienced team working with trusted suppliers. By working with our suppliers, we can make a bigger impact.
Our suppliers include our development project teams, such as architects, engineers, building contractors and trade contractors. Our subsidiary Broadgate Estates provides property management services, managing a supply chain that includes cleaning, customer service, engineering, landscaping and security.
We ask suppliers to work in a way we believe is best practice to achieve our social, environmental and ethical standards.
We achieve this through:
- Regular meetings with suppliers.
- Reviewing supply chain sustainability risks.
- Providing clear guidance for suppliers on social, environmental and ethical matters, such as our Supply Chain Charter and Sustainability Briefs.
- Implementing robust processes, such as our ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System for developments.
- Writing key performance indicators into contracts, where appropriate.
We recognise the importance of good supplier relationships to the overall success of our business. We manage dealings with suppliers in a fair, consistent and transparent manner and are signatories to the UK Government’s Prompt Payment Code.

Our suppliers are key to the delivery of our sustainability strategy and so our 2020 targets include tier 1 contracts being Supply Chain Charter compliant. To view our supplier data: www.britishland.com/data.
Across our retail and office assets, our internal asset management specialists are responsible for overall strategy, decision making and relationships with occupiers, both existing and potential. For retail, we engage specialists to provide support with rent reviews and lease renewals. For offices, our asset managers control most leasing activity, as single occupiers tend to be larger and there are far fewer individual leasing transactions.
Our independently operating subsidiary Broadgate Estates has long provided property management services across our office assets and we have recently expanded its remit to cover our retail assets, as we work together to ensure all our assets are recognisably Places People Prefer. Broadgate Estates outsources activities such as cleaning, customer service, engineering, landscaping and security, proactively managing suppliers’ performance on our standards. Broadgate Estates also manages places for third parties.
Our development activities are delivered separately from asset management. We have a dedicated in-house development team, which develops new buildings in partnership with external specialists that include project managers, architects, engineers, building contractors and trade contractors.
As part of our contracts and tendering procedures, we integrate community and resource management standards into our suppliers’ activities and our construction sites. We provide our suppliers with a clear understanding of our requirements through bespoke briefing materials that include our Sustainability Brief for Developments, Health and Safety Policy for Developments, Office Design Brief and Supply Chain Charter.
We require our key construction suppliers to be accredited through Building Confidence, an industry-wide scheme administered by Achilles. This is recognised as the standard for supplier excellence within the construction industry. We require major suppliers and encourage other suppliers to sign up to the scheme. The accreditation includes checking the supplier’s financial, safety, environmental/sustainability, social and ethical, occupational health and quality management systems, competencies and capabilities.
