Suppliers

We manage our business through our experienced team working with trusted suppliers. By working with our suppliers, we can make a bigger impact.

We actively promote fair and collaborative relationships with our suppliers, demonstrating our values through our Supply Chain Charter commitments.

Our suppliers include our development project teams, such as architects, engineers, building contractors and trade contractors.

Our subsidiary Broadgate Estates provides property management services, managing a supply chain that includes cleaning, customer service, engineering, landscaping and security.

Our suppliers are key to the delivery of our sustainability strategy and so our 2020 targets include 100% of tier 1 and 2 contracts Supply Chain Charter compliant (for prioritised contracts).

Managing our suppliers

We ask suppliers to work in a way we believe is best practice to achieve our social, environmental and ethical standards.

We achieve this through:

  • Regular meetings and workshops with suppliers.
  • Reviewing supply chain sustainability risks. We review our supply chain risks annually and publish risk maps covering our development activity, managed portfolio and corporate spend here.
  • Providing clear guidance for suppliers on social, environmental and ethical matters, such as our Supply Chain Charter and Sustainability Briefs. These are available for download here.
  • Implementing robust processes, such as our ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System for developments.
  • Requiring key construction suppliers to be accredited through Building Confidence, an industry scheme administered by Achilles. This includes checking the supplier’s financial, safety, environmental, social, ethical, occupational health and quality management systems.
  • Writing key performance indicators into contracts, where appropriate.
  • Holding annual awards to recognise the contributions from our supply chain towards achieving our sustainability goals, our Awards for Excellence.

Treating our suppliers fairly

We recognise the importance of good supplier relationships to the overall success of our business.

  • British Land has been a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, which promotes absolute respect for human rights, since 2009.
  • We manage dealings with suppliers in a fair, consistent and transparent manner and are signatories to the UK Government’s Prompt Payment Code.
  • We are a member of APRES, an Action Programme on Responsible and Ethical Sourcing across the construction industry.

In 2017, we also hosted a conference for key suppliers and advisors, giving them the chance to comment on how our relationship could work better for all involved.
